Our mission
at the Windsor Voluntary Car Service is to provide
caring, accompanied, private-car transport for
residents in Windsor whose limited mobility
precludes them from using Taxis, Buses or Trains.
WVCS was inaugurated in 1999 and has
proven to be a highly valued service within the
Borough. Benefits to our clients are directly
measurable, as having driven them to and from their
destination in safety and comfort, their warm
appreciation gives us that vital indicator that a
quality service has been delivered.
We operate out of an
office close to Windsor town centre. The office is
manned by an Administrator, and at any one time we
have a pool of around twelve volunteer drivers who
donate anything from an hour, to fifteen hours of their
time a week providing private-car transport for our
clients.
Our service is open to residents living in the SL4
postcode catchment. Most journeys are within the
Windsor area, or to destinations within a ten mile
radius around Windsor, such as Wexham Park Hospital
in Slough, Heatherwood Hospital in Ascot, and St
Marks Hospital in Maidenhead. Fulfilling requests
for transportation to more distant places is
dependant on having drivers available who will
undertake longer journeys.
We are a small
organisation and have limited driver resource, and
can only take on clients who fully conform to our
eligibility criteria. We operate the service
efficiently and economically to ensure our limited
financial resources are properly utilised. To save
administration costs, we use a tiered flat-rate
charging system and also take payments directly from
clients at the journey conclusion rather than waste
money on invoicing.
Importantly, we are NOT
a cut-price taxi service, and will not accept
clients solely on the basis of their reduced
financial means.
